Star Warsfans everywhere were delighted to discover that their favorite live-action theme park attraction was getting its own VR game. Today, ILMxLAB released its reveal video forStar Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge.
Players begin theirStar Warsjourney as a droid repair technician after a crash-landing outside the Black Spire Outpost. From there, the developers are crafting an immersive play space that brings the outpost to life in VR. This is a serious undertakingwhich has only been known since May the 4th,Star WarsDay. From the looks of the reveal trailer, the developers are delighted that they get to create a “new, fun way to experience the Star Wars universe.”

There are critics who argue thatStar Warsshould get out of video games and stick to TV, but ILMxLAB is working hard to prove them wrong. The characters, the buildings, the item designs, and all the related interactions will giveTales from the Galaxy’s Edgeplayers insight into the greaterStar Warsuniverse.
Right now, in a time whereamusement and theme parks have lost significant revenue due to the COVID-19 pandemic, virtual experiences like these can let fans in the door without them stepping out of the house. To make it work, the developers need to make the virtual Black Spire Outpost feel just as real as the one in Orlando, if not more so. “Being able to just walk around with these characters and experience their world,” says Bobby Moynihan, who plays the barkeep Seezelslak, “you become part of it.”
Star Wars fans who are simply too impatient to wait for the Oculus Quest title to come out to see Black Spire Outpost can instead visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida, which have reopened. They just need to abide byDisney’s social distancing rules for its theme parks.
Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edgewill be available later this year for Oculus Quest.
