Sea of Thievesis quickly coming up on its two-month anniversary and it looks like a celebration of sorts is planned. Today Rare announced that the much-anticipated Hungering Deep update is on track and will release on May 29 as part of the monthly Inside Xbox event. The Hungering Deep will beSea of Thieves' first major content update, but certainly not its last.

Details regarding The Hungering Deep are scant, which is entirely Rare’s intent. The studio has said in previousSea of Thievesdeveloper updates that it wants the updates to be as mysterious as can be managed, so pirate crews can discover the new content naturally within the world. That won’t stop Rare from dropping hints, however. After all, what’s a pirate game withoutrumor and legend?

The Hungering Deep says a lot in its title alone, but to help reinforce the messaging both a trailer and a teaser image were shared, hinting at what players can expect. Something unknown lurks below the water – something hungry. Some say it’s a shark, only larger. Others say it’s just endless teeth under the water. Everyone agrees that, whatever it is, it’s best avoided.

Sea of Thieveshas already confirmed thatsix major content updatesare planned for the rest of 2018, with The Hungering Deep being the first. Two more content updates will be released this summer, named Cursed Sails and Forsaken Shores. Then three as-yet-unnamed updates will follow in the later months of the year. The Hungering Deep’s launch will also mark the start ofSea of Thieves' weekly events, which have yet to be detailed.

The Hungering Deep, and every following content update, will contain at least one brand new AI threat. An AI threat is an enemy-type or encounter that creates new gameplay experiences. And, of course, each update will also feature newitems and cosmeticsas well as new achievements and adventures for pirates to discover. The pirate’s life is ever-changing inSea of Thieves. It’s all one can do to keep their feet and shift the sails as the wind changes direction.

Sea of Thievesis available now on PC and Xbox One.
