Earlier today, Niantic brought thefighting-type eventinPokemon GOto a close, meaning that players can expect to see a more typical pool of Pokemon out in the wild. Not only did Niantic end the fighting-type event, though, it also seems to have brought back Lugia for legendary raids.

The return of Lugia in legendary raids forPokemon GOcomes as a surprise, as legendary raids typically star one Pokemon at a time. In fact, Niantic just region-swapped Latios and Latias last Tuesday, and prior to their introduction to the game, Lugia was the sole star of legendary raids.

It’s possible Lugia’s return to legendary raids inPokemon GOwas an accident that will be corrected whenever Niantic gets around to it. However, it’s also possible that Lugia was added back to legendary raids because Niantic will have multiple legendary Pokemon in raids moving forward. This has yet to be verified, but it would make sense, especially when the company eventually runs out of new legendary Pokemon to add to the rotation.

Plus, legendary Pokemon are also available through the Field Research system now, which givesPokemon GOplayers more ways to catch legendaries than ever before. Niantic will eventually run out of legendary Pokemon to give out as Field Research rewards as well, and so perhaps that too will eventually feature multiple legendary Pokemon instead of just one at a time.

Right now, fans can catch thelegendary Pokemon Zapdosthrough the Field Research system, and last month, they were able to snag Moltres. Assuming Niantic keeps with this pattern, players should be able to expect Articuno to be added as a Field Research reward in June, with the legendary beasts or even Lugia to follow in the subsequent months. Of course, Niantic could change things up at any time, so fans will just have to wait for official word to know for sure.

In the meantime, anyone who wants to add a powerful Lugia to their collection should be sure to participate in one of the Lugia legendary raids while they’re still available.
