The red flower is primarily associated with the U.K. and Commonwealth countries for Remembrance Day on Nov. 11. Although less common, the U.S. also uses the symbol — the Veterans of Foreign Wars conducted the first nationwide distribution of remembrance poppies before Memorial Day in 1922, and the American Legion Auxiliary distributes paper poppies in exchange for donations around Memorial Day and Veterans Day, which was also on Saturday.
Meghan also wore the accessory last Wednesday, when she and Prince Harry (who spent 10 years in the British Army) recognized veterans and service members during a series of surprise outings in San Diego ahead of Veterans Day and Remembrance Day.
That evening, the coupleopened a new Navy SEAL Foundation’s Warrior Fitness Program West Coast facility. Meghan sported a black suit adorned with a poppy pin.

CEO of the Navy SEAL Foundation Robin King tells PEOPLE that the couple “came prepared” for the visit.
“They were absolutely fantastic. They had done a lot of homework on the Navy SEAL Foundation, on the program,” King shared exclusively with PEOPLE. She added that Meghan and Harry “came prepared, and they were extremely interested in knowing what the program did, what it was going to do and how it’s going to impact the community.”
She continued, “I was thoroughly impressed with both of them on how much they wanted to engage with the community members to talk about the real issues.”
