Match recap: WBG vs BLG

Most people considered BLG the favorites in this LoL Worlds 2024 semi-final, and they were totally right. It took Bilibili Gaming three games to get this win and secure their spot in the grand final. What a revenge for Worlds 2023!

Weibo Gaming had good moments and excellent fights. But every time, BLG managed to take advantage of those situations. They scaled their champions nicely, and they struck when the best moments came.

In general, the games were close, and only in the second halves, the power of BLG became obvious. Game 1 brought us the latest First Blood in the League of Legends World Championship 2024.

BLG will face the winner of the second semi-final, T1 vs Gen.G.

Game 1

During a pretty close starting period, the teams exchanged the objectives: BLG got two Dragons and the first turret, while WBG got themselves five Voidgrubs and Rift Herald.

The First Blood went for BLG around minute 19 — which is the latest First Blood of the entire tournament. Weibo Gaming responded with an excellent fight around Drake. Not only did they secure that Dragon but they also killed four BLG champions. After that, WBG took Baron, but they couldn’t get too much out of this buff: just a little bit of gold and a lost teammate, as Xiaohu got ganked by BLG.

When WBG started another Baron, BLG responded perfectly. They got some kills and the objective. Yone did not work too well for Xiaohu, as BLG aimed and took him first to succeed in the following team fights. Weibo Gaming did not give up on the game, though. They lost a Dragon, but they won a fight around it and used this chance to destroy a few turrets.

Smolder of knight turned out to be a clever pick. After scaling, the small dragon became a serious power in the hands of BLG. When Weibo Gaming secured Baron once again, they couldn’t stand against Bilibili Gaming. With a few opponents missing, BLG started the siege, destroyed a couple of Inhibitors, and without further ado, took the Nexus.

It’s one point for BGL in the LoL World 2024 semi-final.

Game 2

Weibo Gaming banned Smolder to not deal with the small dragon again, and they did not risk giving Yone to BLG. Bilibili Gaming took Syndra for Mid. WBG made an even more unusual pick: Elise for Jungles.

BLG got a very early kill this time: they punished Light for a slight overstepping. And soon, WBG responded — there were 11 kills in total at around minute 12, with 6 being on Weibo. Another advantage for WBG was getting all six Voidgrubs. Kalista in the hands of Light started accumulating kills and resources, so most of WBG’s gold advantage was on her.

The game slew down after the starting mayhem. The gold and kill advantage of WBG disappeared, but BLG couldn’t go ahead  — for a while. When Weibo secured their third Dragon and Baron, BLG initiated a fight, and many WBG champions lost their lives there. WBG ended up with -1.5k gold on that Baron buff.

Weibo Gaming went for a Soul, but BLG contested that objective so successfully that they got an Ace and destroyed the Nexus of WBG. Bilibili Gaming needed one more game to proceed to the grand final of the League of Legends World Championship 2024.

Game 3

For the first time in this match, WBG abandoned the pair of Kalista and Renata Glasc. They went for Ezreal on the Bot lane and Maokai as a Support. On the BLG side, knight took Akali, and his team had the third game in a row with Jax and Skarner on Bin and XUN.

After an early one-for-one trade, both teams focused on farming. The first massive fight happened around Voidgrubs, and BLG got all three of the creatures plus one kill. Aggressive moves continued after that, and again, BLG came out of them with advantages.

WBG got the other set of Voidgrubs and the Rift Herald. BLG chose to take a Dragon. Weibo Gaming went for the second Dragon, and they won a fight around the objective, making the kills gap smaller. Rumble on Breathe was an MVP in that situation.

The response from BLG was quick. They waited for WBG to take the next Dragon and then collapsed and won the fight. With four opponents down, BLG went for Baron. This buff brought them an Ace and a destroyed Mid Inhibitor. After a slight delay, there was another Ace, and BLG won the match.

The teams did not face each other at the LoL World Championship 2024 before this match. It’s a Knockout stage, so the stakes are extremely high.

In Spring 2024, BLG and WBG played only once, during the Group stage. BLG won that match 2:0, and then they won the entire split. Weibo Gaming finished 5th-6th.

The 2023 record is similar. BLG defeated WBG in the Group Stages of regional splits. In Spring 2023, they also played in the Playoff brackets, and BLG won.
