Match recap: DK vs WBG

The first two games were very slow and cautious from both teams. It felt like DK and WBG wanted to get a confident advantage first and only then go for active fighting and base sieges. Dplus certainly achieved that in a pretty long Game 1. But Weibo Gaming made their push earlier in Game 2 to make the score even.

In the decisive game, the slow approach was somewhat abandoned by WBG. They went for early aggression and developed the initial might. Dplus KIA tried to compensate for that, but it did not happen. Weibo Gaming won this match to proceed to the LoL Worlds 2024 Knockout stage.

“I’m the last one to qualify for the quarter-finals as a former Griffin player. Also, in the future, if all five of us will be able to take a photo together, it would be great. […] Maybe from the very beginning, in terms of synergy and picks, we had issues around those parts. But definitely, with the effort put by all the players and the coaching staff, I think we’ve made some improvement already. And we will try our best to do better.”

Game 1

After exchanging some kills in the beginning, the teams settled with a slow game for quite a while. They traded Voidgrubs (DK) for a Drake (WBG). The splashy offense brought some good results for Dplus KIA. They won a nice team fight and got themselves the rest of Grubs and a Dragon. Beyond that, the game still was pretty even. When the Korean team got themselves Baron, this buff did not give too much for DK.

Everything changed, when WBG lost a team fight, and DK secured another Baron. They started a siege and destroyed the bot Inhibitor. In this dire situation, Weibo players managed to steal a Cloud Drake and be effective in team fights. But when DK got Cloud Drake, they stopped the Baron push by WBG, killed four of them, and won the game.

Game 2

Both teams decided to pick previously banned champions. Xiaohu got one of the strongest mid-laners at LoL World 2024,Yone. ShowMaker was on the newest addition to the League of Legends roster, Aurora.

Slow and extremely even — this describes the start of Game 2 between DK and WBG nicely. There were no kills up to minute 11. When WBG went for the second set of Voidgrubs, they achieved this objective and won a team fight. Soon, three Dragons were also on their side. The slow and thorough approach started to pay off for the Chinese team. Suddenly, WBG players were delivering kills one after another.

The last piece of advantage for them was the Infernal Soul. With it, Weibo Gaming went for Baron, started a siege, destroyed the bot and top Inhibitor, delivered an Ace, and made the score 1:1.

Game 3

The swap started from the draft for the teams. DK and WBG exchanged their mid-lane champions. ShowMaker was on Yone this time, and Xiaohu took Aurora.

Considering the previous games, Weibo Gaming started unexpectedly: with an early offense and two quick kills. They enjoyed that apparently and quickly went for other aggressive moves. WBG got five Voidgrubs and the first Dragon.

Not everything were flawless for WBG. The ultimate of Miss Fortune dealt so much damage! DK wanted to eliminate the gold and kill gap between the teams. Dplus KIA got the Inferno Dragon, but WBG killed one of them and used this opportunity to secure the Baron buff. After another Dragon and a pretty careful siege, Weibo Gaming put DK’s base in ruins.

Dplus KIA even managed to secure Baron in this situation, but they died in the immediate fight. WBG won the game and the match. DK is out of Worlds.

Chinese vs Korean League

In a way, this LoL Worlds 2024 match nicely represents what the top-most level of League of Legends competition is all about. Teams from LoL Champions Korea (LCK) and LoL Pro League (LPL, China) often battle for the biggest international titles. This was a situation at the previous League of Legends World Championship — in 2023, the Korean team T1 got the title after defeating a few Chinese opponents. A similar scenario was unleashed at the Mid-Season Invitational 2024, whereBLG and Gen.Gplayed in the grand final.

Dplus KIA did not participate in the MSI 2024. During the current LoL World Championship, they faced two Chinese team before WBG — andDK lost to LNGin Round 3 andto Top Esportsin the Round 4 qualification match.
