Earlier in the week, theMagnolia Tablecookbook author shared acute snapof Crew holding a bin of white pumpkins before he decorated them and put them on display.
While Joanna seemed to find her son’s Halloween graffiti entertaining, she hasn’t always been a fan of unplanned moments like these. During an exclusive interview with PEOPLE in November 2022, the home design expertopened up about living more freely in her 40sand having a new appreciation for the spontaneity of things. She remembered how Crew even helped her through the process.
She recalled: “I’m flat on my belly and the whole time I’m thinking, ‘I’m too old for this. Then Chip pulls up with the kids and starts honking like, ‘Are you okay!?’ They all thought I fell — because Mom doesn’t normally do that.”

While the whole ordeal was “simple and silly,” Joanna added that she was thankful to have shared that encounter with her son as “a lot of joy comes from unplanned moments.”
At the time, she reflected on her age and what she hoped to find with this fresh perspective.
“I’m 44 years old, and so say I have another 44 years to go, I want to live it lighter,” she said. “I want to live more freely. Just be grounded in who I am, what I believe I’m here for.”
