Stardew Valleyis the ultimate cozy game, full to the brim of fun characters and a community that cares about each other. What’s strange about the community in Pelican Town isthe number of outsiders that seem to never interact with the main cast. Gunther, the curator of the museum, is one such character that never interacts with another NPC and seemingly has no life outside standing at his counter.
WheneverStardew Valleygets an update in the future,NPCs like Gunther and the Adventurer’s Guild’s Marlon deserve more complex characters. Interactions with other NPCs, schedules around town, and even buildable relationships would help make Pelican Town and the surrounding areas feel more like a real community where everyone truly knows everything about each other.

Gunther Is A Cool Character, But He Needs More Depth
The Museum Curator Doesn’t Even Have A Place To Sleep
The curator of thePelican Town museum, Gunther has one of the best designs of any character inStardew Valley. His blue rustic outfit, complete with white gloves, paired alongside a portrait pose with a tipped hat immediately give playersthe impression that Gunther will be quite the character. Unfortunately, after his initial introduction, in which he tells the player the last curator stole the entire museum’s collection and asks for help rebuilding, Gunther doesn’t say much.
In fact, Gunther doesn’t just refrain from speaking much with the player. He quite literallynever leaves the museum, as he is always stationed at the front counter, even after hours. He has no house, or even backroom, to live in, which is strange considering how every other NPC in the game has a place to go.
Gunther deserves more, especially since his character has so much potential. A quirky curator, who seems to have somewhat recently moved to Pelican Town, and needs to rebuild an empty museum is a very fun idea.He could easily have relationships with characters like Penny, Harvey, and Elliott, who visit the museum often, and give the player quests related to discovering local history.
Too Many Outsiders In Stardew Valley Doesn’t Make Sense
Every NPC Should Know Each Other In Such A Small Town
Stardew Valleyis a game about community and building relationships, which makes havingtoo many characters on the outer fringes of town a little strange.Marlon, Gil, and Guntherare all humans that don’t interact at all with the main cast of characters in town. Even Linus, a self-proclaimed loner, has relationships with the people in town, mainly Gus, as seen in the cutscene where he offers Linus a hot meal.
As it stands, there are too many old men who live on the edge of town inStardew Valleyand never speak to anyone else, only occasionally lurking aroundat annual festivals in town. While they don’t need to be fully fleshed-out characters with complicated relationships, like Mayor Lewis and Marnie, seeing them occasionally at Pierre’s General Store and being able to chat would help make Pelican Town feel more like a real community. At the very least, these characters should have rooms in their businesses that they can go to after closing time.
