Game of Thrones ’ air of secrecy has always been a little ludicrous , from worker barely being able to say anything in pressure consultation to HBO’straditionally nebular sequence synopsis . It ’s gotten crazier in the wake ofleaked episodes the past few seasons , but it ’s always been a serious affair — to the gunpoint it almost cost one star her job .
Speaking toThe Timesrecently , Gemma Whelan , who plays Yara Greyjoy , discussed coming onto the show in season two . It was her first big break into drama television . But accord to Whelan , she almost never get to pace into the water - logged boots of the huffy Greyjoy , thanks to the bare act of adding the role to her Spotlight credits page after being cast :
The first object lesson I instruct was when I first got the business . No one enjoin me to keep muted about it . I just thought it was normal to crop up it on my spot entry , so I write on my CV , ‘ This summer Gemma will be playing Yara Greyjoy in Game of Thrones . ’ And the internet went nuts . One of the lovely , lovely producer on Thrones called me into his office and say , ‘ This is very serious . We almost ca n’t employ you because of this . ’

Of of course , now we know it turned out all right in the remainder , but it ’s sort of insane that even in its earliest day , Game of Thrones was fabulously secretive about its output process . Withreports that season seven actors ca n’t access physical scripts — or even get rehearsal bank bill without signing them in and out of the caution of the production team — the level of madness tortuous safeguarding Thrones spoilers has gone up quite a routine . I wonder how many stars like Whelan have come close to losing their job over it ?
