On last night ’s Eureka , our paladin were haunted by the ghosts of their past , as beloved ( and not so dear ) characters returned to bring mayhem . It was a twisty , disturbed sequence , and Eureka is intelligibly just getting warm up .
allow ’s just get this out of the path right now – as presently as it became clear Nathan Stark was n’t really back from the dead , this episode was going to be at least a snatch of a minor letdown . On some grade , I knew go in that Stark probably was n’t for good back , if only because Ed Quinn was listed as a guest star for just this episode . Still , even though I ’ve only late become a sports fan of Eureka , Stark has become one of my best-loved characters , and I must admit I was hope against hope that he had somehow found his way home . ( If you squint , there are peradventure some very slight clues that Stark was n’t all Carter ’s delusion , but yeah … he ’s still locomote . For now . )
But once I got over this dashing hopes , I find “ The Ex Files ” to be a playfulness , engaging instalment , even if it did feel like Eureka was mostly just clearing its pharynx for the big mid - season stopping point . Just as Jack and Allison are finally ready to follow up on a kinship , they ’re travel to by each other ’s exes – Tess has suddenly shown up at GD , and Nathan is back from the dead . This seems like enough soap opera house cannon fodder for five episode minimum , but it turns out Jack and Allison are actually just hallucinating these apparent retort .
Meanwhile , Dr. Grant has been recruited by Beverly Barlowe and her consortium ( assuming that ’s still what they call themselves in this timeline ) to put down a very muscular Modern EMP twist . She awakens Grant ’s old high-mindedness about only using scientific discipline to forbid another Hiroshima and Nagasaki , not to cause it , and he proves just as well carry to switch side as James Callis ’s other iconic role . It helps that he ’s also hallucinating , in this case Adam Barlowe , the sire of Beverly and one of his associates back in 1947 .
Just to perplex thing further , Eureka is shake itself apart , as events of massive transonic sonorousness cause structures to collapse from their own vibrations . This should have something to do with the EMP , but no one can figure out why . Fargo and Jo are also hallucinating , with Fargo seeing his 5th grade bane and Jo assure the Zane she leave behind in the honest-to-god timeline . And , because there ’s not enough going on already , Zane is still pursuing Zoe , which he admits is only partially to piss off Carter .
This was one of those episode where the mystery story is so unclear and so fuzzy for so long that it ’s intemperate to get a grip on the installment , and I like “ The Ex Files ” a lot more when I watched it again with the full noesis of where it was headed . This episode in all likelihood posed too many mysteries for its own trade good . Is Stark really back ? ( No . ) Why is Zane acting so inconsistently ? ( Because Jo ’s hallucinate one of them . ) Why are the five of them hallucinating ? ( Because of a forgetful circuit with this retentiveness - sharing matter … it ’s a bit complicated , actually , but that ’s the essence of it . ) What ’s causing the sonic ringing ? ( Beverly is behind that . ) And what ’s Beverly actually up to ? ( She ’s out to steal the EMP machine . ) That ’s a ton of stuff to decide , and it bogged the episode down the first clock time I watched .
That said , once I did know what was exit on , there ’s a ton to enjoy here . Ed Quinn is nifty as the ever so slightly exaggerated edition of Stark that Carter remembers , and both Quinn and Colin Ferguson work out their characters ’ erstwhile , albeit reluctant comradeliness . It ’s skillful to hear that Carter is felicitous to see Stark again , regardless of the circumstance , and the mental Stark seems genuinely committed to helping Carter solve the mystery . Considering Stark ’s sacrifice and his final sayonara to Carter in “ I Do Over ” are probably the series ’s most poignant , heartbreaking moments , I ’m glad that they were capable to bring the fiber back without detracting from his original leave .
Just when I think I was getting a bite of a handle on Dr. Grant , he betrays Global Dynamics and his friends at the drop cloth of a lid . Well , maybe not at the drop of a hat , exactly , but I would have liked to see more indication of his ultra - pacifistic views earlier in the season . The Barlowes did n’t need to prod him all that much to make him turn over traitor , and I ’m not convinced this change of warmheartedness was justified base on what we attend on the CRT screen . Of of course , this whole installment is a prelude to the finale ’s return to 1947 , which hopefully will evidence us all we need to know about Dr. Grant . Either way , he had the course of the Nox when Allison require him who he was hallucinate , and he lie , “ marvelous , leggy blonde , slinky red dress . ” Now why does that verbal description voice so frakking familiar ?
last , a news for Fargo . The fictional character has truly do into his own this season , and he ’s really produce into the unexpected role of head of GD . While his successful confrontation with General Mansfield was the most obvious example of his new - discover self-assurance , there were some other little moments that showed how far the character has come . His give-and-take with Zane about Zoe showed both guts and perception , as he aright recognized Zane wants to irritate Carter by dating his daughter . And it was nice that mental Stark part with a second to compliment the fresh and improved Fargo , even if it ’s a number hard to form out whether that ’s what Stark thinks , what Carter thinks , or what Carter thinks Stark would think . Either which way , it ’s high praise . Now let ’s warp up for that finale in two weeks ’ metre . Whatever ’s about to happen , I ’m venture it ’s buy the farm to be gravid .
