Constantine , the Modern show center around the DC character John Constantine , debut on Friday , and while it may not survive up to its seed textile , it ’s a fun new addition to the supernatural TV slate thanks to some gruesome visuals and a slant - perfect run man .
When we first encounter John Constantine ( Matt Ryan ) , he ’s in a psychiatrical infirmary , hoping that science and logical system will somehow convince him that there are no such things as demons . He ’s reeling with guilt after allowing a nine - twelvemonth - old girl identify Astra to be dragged to Hell , and he has signed himself up for therapy and electroshock in Leslie Townes Hope of forget his guilt feelings .
From the start , this Constantine is wonderfully ironic and self - deprecating . It ’s clean-cut that he does n’t unfeignedly believe that he can win over himself that the world is n’t sinister and terrible and full of demons , but he ’s desperate enough to try anything . He deals with his guilt through humor , and he ’s nimble to manoeuvre its sharp edge at himself . But when he notices that the cockroaches in the infirmary are all channelize in the same direction , he ca n’t help himself ; he has to follow them toward the supernatural phenomenon they ’re pull in to , a phenomenon he touch with an middle roll and a bit of loth but competent exorcism .
We quick learn that the lady who found herself painting the Holy Scripture “ LIV DIE ” on a roach - infested wall was possessed by the spirit of John ’s dead friend . “ LIV ” is Liv Aberdeen ( Lucy Griffiths ) , the deadened friend ’s daughter , and John checks himself out of the infirmary to protect her .
Here ’s where we get to the weakest part of the cowcatcher , but one that has so small to do with the rest of the serial that I ’m not to a fault touch . Liv come out only in the archetype ; John ’s getting a novel Girl Friday ( Zed Martin , played by Angélica Celaya ) next workweek . The writers did n’t invest much personality in Liv , which is a mo pestering given that she is , momently , our gunpoint - of - vista quality . But at least some demented stuff happens to her in the meanwhile .
In addition to the great window - shattering aspect in the hospital , we get Liv ’s murdered neighbor twitch around in her body bag , and then the same soundbox empty - eyed and flail on the strong-armer of the medical tester ’s van . It ’s moments like these that make Constantine promising , that give us a sense of its slimly demented timber . And there ’s something competently invasive about the angel Manny ( Harold Perrineau ) possessing various people ’s consistence in decree to speak with John .
However , Constantine does have , on the whole , a cleaner background , more like its supernatural telecasting neighbors than like the Hellblazer comic . Even when Ritchie Simpson ( Jeremy Davies ) rattles off all the birth control pill he ’s consume to cope with his own guiltiness over Astra ’s eternal damnation , it seems strangely too nice and simple , in all likelihood because we ’re just not meet the inauspicious effects of his drug purpose yet . But at long last , it makes sense that the tv set show would have its own tone , one separate from the comics — peculiarly the idea - bendingly mystical Alan Moore strip . But it has some link to the DC population , perfect with a pointed moment involving Dr. Fate ’s helmet .
It ’s a promising premiere , but we ’ll have to see how the show change once we ’ve traded Liv for Zed — and how John ’s mission to recuperate Astra ’s soul plays out over multiple installment . For now , though , we ’re just felicitous to have an doer who embodies the character so well and a show with a sour sentience of humor .
