The members of the Target Committee arrive at the Trinity Site to decide how and when ( and where ) they will use their shiny nuclear bomb ( Fat Man and Little Boy ) , should the test be successful . Frank Winter is swear on Charlie to make a strong character for blow up a bomb over a derelict island as a warning barb . shew our baron while showing constraint , and Emperor Hirohito will deliver not to the Allies , but to the power of a “ second sun . ” He severalise Charlie to wait until the very death of the encounter , after the other members have fall apart themselves out debate about it , and to make a personal , emotional appeal . Charlie settle to use his Logos : show mercy to Japan ’s children now , so that they will show mercifulness to future American children in turn should another warfare transpire .
regrettably , Charlie ’s world implodes when Abby announces she has sent their son back to her parents in Brooklyn , to protect him from Charlie ’s malefic influence . She ’s found out ( because Darrow tapes every conversation in his role ) that back when Foppie was considering leave behind the project , Charlie had evidence Darrow to “ take care of it ” — significance , remove Jean Tatlock from the equality , the same way Darrow made Frank Winter “ disappear . ” She calls him a monster . Abby was the one who suggested Charlie turn over the secret detail of German physicist to the U.S. military machine , thereby derail Germany ’s dud project . Yet the potential execution of one innocent woman to save the American effort fret her the ill-timed way . It ’s not precisely consistent — but then , human beings rarely are .
So when the Target Committee convenes , Charlie give Frank ’s playbook out the window . He takes the flooring mightily away , and tell them he ’d intended to indicate for blow up a dud on a deserted island , so that “ We can be feared and bed , and then be forgive . ” But he has changed his mind : “ We can be have intercourse , or we can have peacefulness . ”
It ’s fairly distorted logic : the world will think we are monsters anyway , he argues , so the committee must embrace that consequence . He advocates targeting a city in the heart of Japan , full of civilians , and detonating the turkey at just the right elevation to ensure maximal wipeout . “ It has to be catastrophic on a scale leaf no one has ever imagine , ” he insist . Only that will prevent another human beings warfare from ever take place again . “ Fear is the only thing that keeps the peace of mind , ” he order the assembled committee . “ We have to be monsters today to discontinue the monsters of tomorrow . ”
His contention is brutal and remorseless — and incisively what come about historically . No wonder a savage Foppie punches Charlie in the face after the meeting adjourns . Charlie makes his monstrous choice and braces himself for the consequences .

And Darrow invites his new recruit , Crosley , to sit down in on the interrogation .

The agent in cathexis is the man Frank knew as his fellow yardbird , “ Joseph Beuker ” ( played by Justin Kirk)—revealed to be a psychiatrist who now works as an interrogative sentence specializer . It must be said that his approach is a bit more hamfisted than that of the former Avram Fischer , a.k.a . Occam , who prefer for an understated , sinister probing via apparently innocuous questions . He was a scalpel ; Beuker ’s more of a cudgel . ( Darrow proves to be an Uzi . )
He does have some useful information : Victor did n’t completely burn his documents , and Beuker has found character to an confederate , computer code - named “ Brooklyn , ” and correctly guesses that this somebody is the key to the sabotage plot of land . But there are a lot of staff office on the Hill hailing from Brooklyn , so they involve more clues . Beuker leave Crosley alone with him , and the captured spy begs for a razor blade or snitch poison so he can kill himself , before he ’s subjugate to torture . But Victor lets slip that he knows Crosley has a son . Hardly anyone on the Hill know this , which means “ Brooklyn ” could be someone Crosley knows .
Victor proves a tough testicle to break , even when Beuker threatens his own girl ( Nora ) , and the clock is ticking for the Trinity Test . So an raring Darrow takes over the examination . Alone . When he emerge , he plainly barks , “ clean house it up ! ” and stalks off . Beuker and Crosley find Victor dead on the floor , the dupe of over - zealous water boarding .
Beuker draft Crosley ’s aid to stage a suicide by hanging the torso in the dead homo ’s barn . Crosley goes a bit green when they have to pull down on the body ’s legs to break the neck , but Beuker is sufficiently impressed with him to invite him to get together a “ young stock of intelligence system . ” World War II is intimately over ; a new , different sort of war is beginning , where it will sometimes be necessary to do secret painful matter ( or clean up their aftermath ) in the name of world peace and national surety . He think Crosley would do well in that organization , promise him he ’ll learn to cope with the horrible vista of the job .
Nora witnesses the removal of a mysterious crateful from the interrogation elbow room and realize it nurse her don ’s body . She deepen the plan : it ’s not enough to undermine the Gadget and foil the test , she tells Meeks , because the scientists will just reconstruct it . She differentiate him to electrify the circuit to go off prematurely , before the evacuation of the arena is complete — a mass murder of all the key players on the Manhattan Project . Her abstract thought is much like Charlie ’s : do one direful thing , and then no one else has to do so ever again .
Meanwhile , the master of the moral compromise , Frank Winter , lose one of his most loyal friend . Helen Prins notice that he redirected the gun model group ’s metallurgy budget to the University of Rochester to fund Liza ’s research in the health burden of radiation . She make he does n’t desire them to finish their bomb model ( Little Boy ” ) on time , and that he sabotaged the dry rivulet pre - trial run . Fed up , she reports this to Darrow .
At the same time , Crosley finds Fritz check the film of his wedding to Jeannie — and there is Jim Meeks , smiling and waving his stylemark Brooklyn baseball game cap . Eureka !
