A new grant aims to help oneself “ writers from scope traditionally underrepresented in the genre to start and stay on bring out . ” And you could help !
Two publicists with Hachette Group , Ellen B. Wright and Faye Bi , are going to be run away the 2013 NYC Marathon asa mode of raising funds to start a Diverse Worlds Grant , which would be dole out by the Speculative Literature Foundation . The Ulysses S. Grant would serve writers to complete work in forward motion , and would be administered similarly to the SLF’sOlder Writers Grant . But those of us who do n’t fit into one special box ( and some who do ) have acknowledge something . There ’s one story that ’s tell in the genre over and over again . You ’ve believably see it . It ’s about a straight white human race , or often a crew of straight snowy men , produce things with science , wielding thaumaturgy , saving the reality , blow stuff up . If there are women or people of colouration call for , we ’re probablylove interestsorsidekicks . We probablyonly spill the beans to , or about , the white male person lead . We probablydie first , or toprovide motivating for the protagonist .

We ask , “ What if ? ” So it behoove us not to be self-complacent about this failure of imagination ; not to let tale go untold because their creators mean there ’s no lieu for them in our ( and their ) genre .
As you might have guessed from the above , we ’re geeks . We ’re also runners . This year , we ’re running the NYC Marathon — the first marathon for the both of us — and it occurred to us that this was a corking opportunity to combine these two interest . This year ( and every class ) , there have been a number of incidents in which fan have been made unwished-for or molest online and at musical style events because of their identity . This is our chance — ours and yours — to do something about it .
We ’ve created this endurance contest fundraiser on Crowdrise to bear theSpeculative Literature Foundation , a non - profit arrangement that promote science fabrication and illusion and advance new writer of both adult and child ’s genre literature . They ’ve match to use the funds we raise to create a raw Duncan James Corrow Grant called the Diverse Worlds grant , which will help author from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in the writing style to set forth and continue publishing . As good skill fiction and fantasy worlds should , this concession will welcome all sort of diversity : sex , race / ethnicity , sexual orientation , class , power point , religion , etc .
